†  2 Thessalonians 2:13 (NET): "But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth."

Definition

In general, justification triggers the process of sanctification by awakening believers to the ever-present, in-dwelling Holy Spirit sent by God as a further blessing of salvation.

A believer is sanctified--that is, purified and made holy--only by surrendering her life and allowing the Holy Spirit to systematically saturate her soul.

As such, the sanctification process bridges the…

†  past for believers who have previously professed their faith,

†  present for new believers beginning and "veteran" believers continuing their walk in the Spirit, and

†  future for all current and future believers.

Definition

Given the biblical, historical, and doctrinal context, we can define sanctification as God's process of making a believer holy.
